United Writing nominated for prestigious award
In a Substack first, Tim de Lisle has been shorlisted by the British Society of Magazine Editors
Tim de Lisle, who runs United Writing, has been shortlisted for an Editor of the Year award by the British Society of Magazine Editors. This is believed to be the first time the awards judges have ever shortlisted a Substack site.
De Lisle is one of five names on the shortlist for Editor of the Year (Sport, Health and Fitness), along with the editors of Rugby Journal, Women’s Health, Bike Radar and Slimming World. United Writing, which gives an independent opinion on all of Manchester United’s Premier League and European games, is the only football title to make the shortlist.
If De Lisle was a footballer, he would be described as well-travelled. He has won two BSME awards in the past – Editor of the Year (Specialist Magazines) when he was at Wisden Cricket Monthly in 1999, and Editor of the Year (Lifestyle) with Intelligent Life in 2010.
“This is a nice surprise,” he said. “United Writing is a tiny operation, run for love not money. It’s not so much low-budget as no-budget. The biggest expense we’ve incurred so far is the entry fee for these awards!
“We’re not expecting to win, as we’re up against the excellent Rugby Journal and the mighty Women’s Health, so I’m going to get my thank-yous in now. Thanks to Rob Smyth, for being my co-pilot and a masterly writer. To Antonio Martin, for giving us a classy logo. To the BSME judges, for seeing something in us. To all the subscribers, for getting what we do. And to the United team, for not being as useless as they were last season.”
